This is a review of Unnatural by Michael Griffo. This is book 1 of the Archangel Academy trilogy. It is a M/M romance. It is technically supposed to be a young adult novel but I don't recommend it for anyone under 17 due to some sexual content and violence. Michael is one of our main characters and starts out in a small town in Nebraska where he doesn't have many friends and is often a victim of bullies. Michael is miserable and always wants to escape his small town. Michael's mother commits suicide and Michael finally has his chance to leave his small town as his father wants him to come back to England to attend Archangel Academy. When Michael was a very young child his mother fled from England back to the states with him in order to get him away from his father. Archangel Academy is an exclusive all boys boarding school in England in the little town of Eden. All is not as it seems at Archangel Academy though.
Michael meets a young man named Ronan that he is attracted to shortly after arriving on campus. He asks his room mate if he knows of him and finds out that the two are half-brothers. Michael doesn't know it but Ronan is a water vampire. There are two types of vampires. You have your regular vampires who are portrayed as being evil and sadistic and then there is the water vampires. The water vampires only feed once a month and must travel to an ancient well located in an underground cave after they feed to join their souls with The Well. The water vampires are revealed to be descendants of the citizens of the lost city of Atlantis. They have the ability to swim underwater without it affecting their breathing, have webbed appendages, etc. when they transform. Ronan receives a blessing from the Well that Michael is supposed to be his mate. He asks Michael if he would give up his human life to become immortal and Michael tells him he would if it meant that they could stay together forever. Michael does not know Ronan is a water vampire at this time. Ronan ends up changing Michael into a vampire and Michael has a bit of a meltdown. Nakano is a regular vampire and Ronan's ex-boyfriend. He is very jealous of the relationship between Michael and Ronan. He wants Michael to join their side against the water vampires at the behest of his master. Ultimately Michael decides not to join the regular vampires and instead returns to Ronan.
There are also several murders in this tale but to go into too much detail about them would ruin the arc of the story. There is a lot going on in this book so I will end this review here so I don't give away too much of the story. I will post reviews of the other two books in this series as soon as I finish them.
