Wicked Embers by Keri Arthur (Souls of Fire Book 2)

This is a review of Wicked Embers by Keri Arthur. This is book 2 in the Souls of Fire series. The series is ongoing. This was a re-read for me.

Wicked Embers opens with Emberley working for her lover Jackson the Fire fae at his private investigation business.  They are searching for the research notes on the Crimson Death virus that is spreading like wildfire. They are trying to find the research so a cure can be found before the virus turns into a pandemic.
Emberley has another prophetic dream. She dreams of a creature made of shadow and ash. This creature is going around killing people. It started out with dead people and was only taking certain organs. With each kill the creature is moving towards the more newly dead and younger victims. Emberley learns that the creature will eventually go after a living baby and she is determined to catch the creature before it does that. A shaman visits Emberley and he gives her the tools she will need to trap the creature in between forms so she can kill it. Emberley manages to track down the creature and saves the baby it was going after. She traps the creature in between forms and she burns it to ash using her flames.

We get to meet some of Jackson’s fae friends and they end up helping Emberley, Jackson, and Rory out with the Vampire Mafia and against the Red Cloaks.  One of the evil vampires is killed intentionally by another vampire during an ambush.

The identity of the leader of the Red Cloaks is confirmed to be Sam’s brother Luke whom Sam had supposedly killed when he became infected. It is also revealed that Luke wants Emberley for his own. Luke and Emberley battle it out and Luke is injured. Emberley reveals the truth to Sam about who the leader of the cloaks really is.

My recommendation: This is the book in a nutshell but there is so much more that goes on so be sure to pick this one up after reading Fireborn and before reading Flameout.
