This is a review of the Necromancer’s Dilemma by SJ. Himes.
This is book 2 in The Beacon Hill Sorcerer series. There are many typos and
grammatical errors in this book so I that bothers you don’t read this one.
Occasionally I will come across a book with extensive errors but still able to
enjoy the story. This was one of those for me. This book is mostly urban
fantasy with elements of male/male romance.
In this book we once again meet up with Angelus and his
vampire mate Simeon as well as the rest of the gang from the first book (Milly,
Issac, Daniel, Eroch and a few other minor characters make appearances as
well). We start out with Simeon having moved in to Angel’s apartment. Daniel
and Issac are both living with Angel and are his apprentices that he is
teaching magic to. Eroch the dragon is also Angel’s constant companion/familiar.
Milly gets attacked by her ex-husband who happens to be a
troll hybrid. He is wearing a nullifier charm and causes Angel’s magic to
reflect back on him. It knocks him unconscious and he ends up in the hospital.
The medical staff wants to examine Angel to find out what is wrong with him
using magic and Issac and Simeon both refuse but the doctor doesn’t want Angel
to leave the hospital even though Simeon has his medical authority. Simeon has
to call in vampire reinforcements to be able to get Angel out of the hospital. After Angel regains consciousness, a magical
practioner/doctor tries to magically examine him forcefully which does not go
over well with Angel or anyone else. Simeon finally gets Angel out of the
hospital and back home.
Shortly after this Simeon and Angel are shopping for
Christmas presents and Simeon scents blood in the air. They follow the trail
and end up at a murder scene. The cops don’t call Angel in on this case because
the victim is human so Angel has no reason to be consulting on the case. The murders
continue and 2 more humans are killed. Then the killer goes to werewolves/werewolf
hybrids. It is at this point Angel is called in. The killer is only removing
the hearts of the victims.
Simeon gets attacked by a Fae high lord and the troll hybrid
and almost dies. Angel comes to his rescue. He calls the Master Vampire Batiste
as Simeon lays there dying. Angel doesn’t feel Simeon will live until Batiste
gets there so he offers his blood to Simeon even though the blood of a magical practioner
is deadly to vampires. Angel’s blood doesn’t harm Simeon and instead heals him.
He finds out that because he is bonded to Simeon that Simeon can drink from him
without his blood poisoning him because of their mate bond. Six vampires go after the Fae lord and the
troll but do not return.
Milly and Angel go to a magical shop where Angel is accosted
by the magical practioner/doctor from the hospital. He finds out this doctor
wants him to be with him instead of Simeon and is stalking him. Angel is able
to obtain a restraining order against the man.
Angel ends up going on a hunt with Simeon looking for the
missing vampires, the Fae lord and the troll hybrid. They find a coffin and there is a body inside
the coffin that is the identical twin to the Fae lord. The Fae lord in the
coffin was mortally injured in battle and his brother tried to save him by placing
him in a stasis spell. The Fae lord Simeon and Angel are hunting has been
murdering people, werewolves, and now one of the missing vampires in order to
find a heart that is pure enough to save his brother. Angel, Simeon, and Eroch
battle the troll and the Fae lord. Angel manages to use his own death magic
through his bond with Simeon to save the Fae high lord in the coffin. He saves
the lord and the brothers are reunited. The police are called in as well as
Batiste. Batiste is able to save the vampire whose heart was stolen by
returning his heart to his body and feeding him his very powerful blood. The
Fae high lord that was committing the murders is taken into police custody but
they don’t know what to do with him yet because it is hard to sentence an
immortal being in a state that doesn’t have a death penalty.
Angel’s stalker breaks into his apartment and he is killed
in self-defense. Daniel gets kidnapped by his family and Angel must save him. Issac
saves Daniel from the fire that Daniel’s mentally unstable father sets. Angel
saves Daniel’s father from the fire but almost loses his own life in the
process. Daniel’s father is turned over to the authorities and Angel and crew
return home.
The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger with Issac revealing
the truth to Angel about what really happened the night their family was
slaughtered.
My recommendation: Once again I have left a lot out so you
will want to be sure you pick this one up to get the full story. If you can get
past the typos, spelling and grammatical errors this one is worth a read.
